Did Cristiano Ronaldo Deserve To Be World Player Of The Year 2014?
The recent award of FIFA’s Ballon d’Or 2014 (Best Player in the World) to Cristiano Ronaldo proves that this honor is more about politics and personal prestige than what he does on the pitch.
Although players from several countries are nominated and win awards, they always play for European clubs while those from other sports such as South America and Mexico are often overlooked. The best player is chosen by players and managers based on bias rather than performance which often creates undeserved winners. Thus the award has lost recognition and has become something of a joke and a joke.
The Ballon d’Or was established by the magazine France Football in 1956 to recognize the creators of the game. But that’s not how it turned out.
Between January 1 and December 31, 2014 in this competition Lionel Messi scored 35 goals in 36 games (11 with the right foot, 23 with the left and the other with a header) while Cristiano Ronaldo scored 38 but less consistent as only 4 were. and his head and left foot are unfavorable.
In addition, Messi created 97 chances, 24 more than any other player and completed 164 dribbles, 63 more than nearest competitor Iker Muniain of Atletico Bilbao (MAILOnline – Why Lionel Messi should win the Ballon d’Or after a record-breaking year with Barcelona; by Kieran Gill, January 12, 2015).
Messi conquered the continent on November 25 when he became the top scorer in the Champions League in Nicosia, Cyprus. It was his 23rd European city, his 16th European country and he recorded the 24th stadium he achieved (MAILOnline etc.)
World Cup 2014
In football’s most important competition, Messi led Argentina to the final, was named Man of the Match in 4 games (the most successful player) and won the Golden Boot as the best player in the tournament.
He was very involved in the competition. All of his goals were the winning goals that saw Argentina finish. He was the third best scorer with 4 goals and 1 assist, he created a lot of chances, he had a very fast game, he got a lot out of the box and made the most balls of any player.
In contrast, Ronaldo has not been involved and only got a late goal against minnows Ghana and an assist against the USA.
A HISTORY MAKER
What Messi did in 2014 is what the Ballon d’Or is all about, history-making performances. On March 16, he became Barcelona’s all-time goalscorer (371). A week later he became the El Clasico (match between Real Madrid and Barcelona) top scorer (21) with a hat-trick.
He scored his 400th goal on September 27 against Granada and surpassed the 59-year-old record as the top scorer in La Liga (253) on November 22. Three days later he joined Raul and scored a hat-trick to become the top scorer in Champions League history. (74).
Considering all this one would think that out of the three nominees Messi is the most deserving of the award. In fact he did not beat Ronaldo but he and his partner Manuel Neuer got less votes (31.48 %) than Ronaldo (37.66%).
In 2013 Ronaldo did not win anything and Franck Ribery won everything but Ronaldo beat him.
How can all this be explained?
POLITICS BASES VOTING
FIFA’s goals require national managers, captains and media officials to vote for the best performers over the past twelve months.
Not surprisingly, players vote for their teammates and peers. In the 2014 tournament for example, Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany) gave all three places to the Germans, Manuel Neuer, Phillip Lahm and Thomas Muller.
Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid) voted for his former teammates Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.
Vincent Kompany (Belgium) rated teammates Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard as the two best players in the world with Arjen Robben third.
The best example of politics in all of this is shown by Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) who announced without giving any reason to complain that he voted for Ronaldo instead of his team Neuer. This ‘change of heart’ can only be explained as coming from a player who wants to save face with his teammates in the dressing room and not from a voter who has a genuine desire.
The same argument applies to managers who only vote for national players. For example, the manager of Argentina, Gerardo Martino, gave all three places to his countrymen, namely, Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria and Javier Mascherano, the coach of Belgium Marc Wilmots voted Belgium Thibaut Courtous in the third place, Didier Deschamps (France) gave the last place French striker Benzema and Dutch striker Guus Hiddink paid tribute to their teammate Arjen Robben.
Players will get more votes if they are popular ‘with the boys’ and can play with the cameras to advertise. Those who defend Ronaldo’s choice as the best football player say that in the second half of 2014 he scored 32 goals. The problem is that 9 of those goals were penalties and his non-penalty goals were 23 which is the same as Messi who had no penalties. Ronaldo is nicknamed “Penaldo” because of his ability to take and score penalties.
In a World Cup year like 2014 how you perform in the tournament is what defines you. In the biggest competition in the world, Ronaldo did not play and his fans made excuses saying he was injured. If that is true, it is sad but being injured is a tragedy, not an opportunity and he can only be tested on the actual job and not just thinking about what he could have achieved if he was fit enough.
The Player of the Year award has lost its validity. But it doesn’t have to be like that. It is not a personality or school advertising competition. It should recognize field performance. Perhaps FIFA officials should be more arbiter, focus more on non-European clubs and use criteria like achievements and fair play to decide the winner. This may not be a perfect system but it would be better than the current one which is very flawed and cannot be taken seriously.
