The Amazing And Often Strange Coffee News Highlights Of 2014

2014 was an interesting year for our beloved coffee, some good, some bad, some strange. As we approach the end of the year we take a look at some of the most popular stories of 2014.

December: Time to Give… But Maybe Not Cocaine.

December, is a time of giving and emotional when we see others opening their gifts. This generosity was put to the test in Berlin when a local coffee roaster opened their new coffee imported from Brazil, and found it contained 33 kilograms of cocaine! We don’t know if they had Christmas smiles on their faces, but we’re guessing confusion and fear were more of a response. He also referred to the “deliverance” of the police and Santa.

November: High Coffee Prices

Coffee prices hit a 2.5-year high in November. Brazil’s hot weather, which has had a major impact on their annual crops, contributed significantly to the increase. Much of the speculation is how this year’s drought will affect the crops in 2015. Despite the rains that have fallen in recent months, the question remains as to how this will affect the growth of new plants in 2015.

Many are predicting that if the weather returns to normal, then the crop should be similar to 2014. If the weather continues to deteriorate then the yield will fall below 2014 levels.

October: Cup North

Closer to home we saw the inaugural “Cup North”, a coffee party for all coffee lovers in the north of England. Joining the local coffee community was an opportunity to be exposed to food and coffee outside of London.

Although the focus was on coffee, the 2-day event also promoted beer, chocolate and other “foodie” delights in and around Manchester. Let’s hope 2015 continues.

September: Coffee & Biofuels

There are many popular ways to use leftover coffee from good compost, to using it as a deodorizer for whiffy socks. One of the most exciting developments of 2014 was the new company Bio-Bean.

Founded in January by Arthur Kay, the company takes coffee grounds used in London and turns the waste into high-quality oil. In September he received a grant of €500,000 from the Dutch Lottery.

Although many thought of it as a bribe to add more information from the UK on EuroVision (Well I made up a bit), the money will help the green Bio-Bean to expand their operations and create a large enough plant to work. coffee gathering place. One gold star for Bio-Bean. Best wishes and best wishes for 2015.

August: Coffee Theme Park Given Green Light

If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting the park with a giant caffeine hit, then August could be your month. Funding was provided to establish a 64-acre coffee plantation in the Gangwon Province of South Korea.

The area has seen a lot of development since the announcement that the 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in the area. Designed as an eco-friendly family-friendly facility, the facility will also include processing, roasting and distribution facilities. It seems that the latter may not be interesting for children. A delivery vessel with embossed livery on the side does not appeal to children.

The project will also create over a thousand jobs for the local community and include a museum and coffee shop.

July: New vs. Instant

In July, Euromonitor International Study published its latest study showing the growth of instant coffee in the countries that were previously associated with tea drinkers, namely China, Turkey and India. About half of the world’s population prefers instant coffee to fresh coffee.

In the UK, although the coffee market is growing and we are seeing a better understanding of fresh and more delicious coffee, the coffee market at the same time has remained strong especially when consumed at home. Ironically in the UK us Brits are responsible for over a third of the coffee sold in Western Europe.

While it is often considered inappropriate to serve instant coffee in most social settings or businesses, at home these unchanging rules seem to go out the window. Comfort in most situations wins over quality.

One of these growths was due to the sale of instant coffee, many of the words that were often reserved for fresh coffee were entering packets, jars and bags in stores. One item describes itself as the world’s first “instant bean”… we still don’t know what that means!

June: National Championship

June won the World Barista Championships 2014. The title went to Hidenori Izaki of Maruyama Coffee Company, Japan. The judges who gave him the award evaluated all the contestants on a number of criteria including their cleanliness, creativity, technical ability and presentation.

Hidenori was the 15th winner of the competition, organized and hosted by the World Coffee Event (WCE). The annual competition was held in Rimini, Italy and was the culmination of many local and regional finals around the world.

Thanks to all the participants especially Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood from the UK who came in 5th, yes we are showing a local bias.

Last Stands

Champion: Hidenori Izaki, Japan

2: Kapo Chiu, Hong Kong

3: Christos Loukakis, Greece

4: Craig Simon, Australia

Fifth: Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood, United Kingdom

Sixth: William Hernandez, El Salvador

May: Coffee & Beef

It seems that coffee grounds can be used for almost anything! Starbucks partnered with a Japanese glass manufacturer to turn leftover coffee grounds into sustainable and animal-friendly food for Tokyo’s dairy market.

Fermented bases were removed from stores at Starbucks and included in beef feed. This method has been tried before but the results showed that the coffee acted as a diuretic among the cows and the amount of salt was a concern. It appears that the new method involves the fermentation of lactic acid which makes the processed food viable. Again, we don’t know how this works, but it looks pretty impressive.

April: UK Barista Championship

If you mentioned the World Championships in April most people (probably tea drinkers) would immediately think of the F1 Grand Prix in China, or the start of the Snooker World Championships with its whispering and sweet shirts. For UK coffee makers, April can mean one thing; Preparations for the Barista World Championships began.

Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood who claimed his second title won the UK Barista Regional Championship, held at the London Coffee Festival. Congratulations to Maxwell. With the award firmly tucked under his arm he heads to Italy to compete in the World Championships in June. Flying the UK flag… maybe without the hips.

Feb/March: World Cup

Much of the speculation in February and March revolved around the world cup and how Brazilians’ love of their country’s sport would affect the coffee industry.

About a third of coffee comes from Brazil, the concern was that the games held in Rio De Janeiro will disrupt the production, delivery and infrastructure of the coffee industry. In a clear threat against the weather all went well, although not so for the Brazilian football team.

January: Myth Dispelled

We’ve all heard the old wives’ tale that coffee causes dehydration. We are told to drink a glass of water for every cup of coffee we drink. Where this theory comes from we do not know, but a study released in January from the University of Bath confirmed that this was indeed a myth.

Instead of causing dehydration, drinking coffee in moderation refreshes us in the same way that water does. Personally if I was lost in the Sahara and deciding whether or not to have a cup of coffee, I would have already chosen… but if it has cream… I’m sprinkling it.
