Playing and Collecting Board Games

I think my interest is board games It started during the World Cup in 1965. I went to live with my cousin in East London, my parents had moved to Surrey 4 years ago. It was early January and we were nearing the end of the school holidays. I saw West Ham play once during the holidays and all the presents were stored away in cupboards, many of which never saw the light of day.

Boredom set in so we decided to tackle Monopoly (a Christmas present), we were twelve at the time. I think twelve-year-olds these days have other ways to spend their winter afternoons during the holidays. However we played a lot of games of Monopoly; we were all competitive but good losers (he came and became a West Ham supporter).

When I got back home to Surrey I ran out and bought a copy of Monopoly and the vouchers I got for Christmas including Spy Ring and Formula One. Sports were not popular in those days, apart from the annual Christmas broadcast, I loved them but none of my friends were interested.

A few years later I bought a copy of Diplomacy and soon got into the fun of postal games; this must have been around 1973/4. Literary magazines (‘zines) were the best; although the post games took longer sometimes it was the only way to know the unknown game especially when you were in an area where there were no opponents.

In 1975 I made a game called Cricketboss, this was a post Cricket Management game very loosely based on Soccerboss (commercial game) which was managing the post at that time. The game ran for three seasons in a ‘zine called Chimera and spawned several versions of the game in the national post game (long after I finished running it). Even now it is mentioned from time to time in dispatches 25 years after its creation.

In 1978 I met several like-minded people and we all met regularly to play board games. At the same time I joined the Dungeons & Dragons Club (not a big fan I’m afraid) I got myself a designated secretary and then I started to introduce fantasy board games in the meetings, soon I did them playing Amatsenga Phanga, Mystic Wood etc. I eventually left a group that played a little D&D but a lot of board games.

In the 80’s the game collection grew, over 500 years by 1988 when we moved to Hampshire. By the time Cornwall arrived in 1991 the collection had exceeded 1,000. The house we bought needed to have enough space to store everything.

1980 – 1995 saw many major league appearances. I remember the good old days at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London, when Games Day meant more than D&D and cartoons. I remember meeting Major Pat Reid promoting Colditz, Alan Parr the founder of United and later Fireside Football, Andrew Neil Inventor of Kingmaker and Maureen Hiron of Quadwrangle and Continuo fame. I went to Midcon, Manorcon and Baycon; prepared by the post Games routine, both are still strong and should always be visited.

I continue to collect games, mainly but not only German and play games and I play with a small group of game developers in Truro. We meet semi-regularly but hopefully more often in the future to play board games. Personally, it is a great opportunity to blow the dust of many games that have long since retired to my loft. We hope to encourage more people in Cornwall to try out the unique skills of competitive sports board games which stretches the mind and imagination beyond my own experience and that of other early Monopoly, Cluedo and Scrabble players.
