The Club World Cup Has Lost Its Purpose

The FIFA Club World Cup was no longer the right way to choose the best team in the world.

Due to the increase in European football in the last decade European clubs (UEFA) have access to the most money in the world and can buy the best players which gives them a huge advantage over other organizations. Furthermore, the format of the game is supposed to favor UEFA and South America (Conmebol) which is unfair to other teams.

The problem is that the competition has failed to keep up with the changes in the game and as a result has lost its relevance and purpose.

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST

The tournament was started in the year 2000 (when it took over the predecessors of the Intercontinental Cup) and was created as an annual competition to showcase the best local talent from various organizations. The idea was that the winners of each continent’s competition would compete against each other and the winner would be named the best club team in the world. This was the theory but in practice it has been different.

In the past, successful non-European artists performed in their own countries and were unknown to foreign audiences. The Club World Cup gave these players an opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage and at the time there was a tension between European and South American clubs.

Conmebol teams won the competition in the first three years of the competition but later European teams took over and the power shifted to Europe.

DAVID vs GOLIATH

The beginning of European dominance happened at the beginning of this century with the increase of money in UEFA football clubs. The downfall of this is that today there is a huge financial gap between European clubs and other organisations.

The winner of the European Champions League earns more money than any other international competition. Real Madrid made $70.1 million last season for winning the UEFA Champions League. In contrast, San Lorenzo earned $6.1 million for winning the Copa Libertadores (Conmebol), ES Setie earned $1.8 million for winning the African (CAF) Champions League and in Asia Western Sydney Wanderers did the same for beating Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia over two legs (YAHOO). . SPORTS – Why is the Club World Cup still struggling for relevance?; by Peter Staunton, December 12, 2014).

With such money in hand, the best talent can be bought by money in the big European leagues, attracted by the lucrative contracts that these leagues offer. This means that Europe has its own talent and what the rest of the world has.

The biggest losers in the migration of football talent to Europe are Brazil and Argentina who are the leading exporters, so Europe’s gain is South America’s loss.

Therefore, every side in the Club World Cup is at a disadvantage compared to their European Champions League counterparts. The competition went from a competition to a battle of David against Goliath, between European clubs represented by what resembles a World eleven that is made up mainly of the best players in the world and minnows, including what is left after their best. talent has been snapped up by major UEFA clubs.

The current champion, Real Madrid, includes expensive and successful players from Spain (Casillas and Sergio Ramos), France (Benzema and Varane), Portugal (Ronaldo and Pepe), Germany (Kroos), Brazil. (Marcelo), Colombia (Rodriquez), Wales (Bale) and Mexico (Chicharito). These players no longer represent the Spanish game. For three players, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriquez, the team paid $367.8 million. Only twelve clubs in the world have a group of players whose market value is higher than the combined value of these three.

Contrast this with Auckland City FC one of the contenders in this year’s Club World Cup who are a team of non-professionals who work full-time jobs outside of football.

A look at some of the previous artists shows a large part of the outside world of their groups. In 2010 when Inter Milan (Italy) won the cup, only 5 players in their team of 23 were Italian while the rest were from South America. Even the media writers failed to keep up with the change they still referred to the Inter team as ‘Italians’.

In 2011 Barcelona won the cup and 10 of their 23 players came from abroad.

BIZARRE FORMAT

Another major problem in the tournament is that the UEFA and South American teams are given a break in the semi-finals and start playing even if the other sides are eliminated. This is done on purpose so that only the biggest clubs will make it to the finals. So far only teams from the two continents have won and only one team from abroad has reached the final, which is TP Mazembe who won last year, the Congolese team.

Given the financial advantage that UEFA enjoys and the incredible format it is currently in, the Club World Cup cannot be called the most successful and the winner cannot be called ‘the best in the world’ any more than its predecessors. The Intercontinental Cup which was limited to UEFA and Conmebol. This competition has lost its importance and is not boastful. A few years ago I won a dance competition but the other contestants couldn’t dance, so was my success something to brag about?

Some parity should be restored to the competition. Brazil and Argentina have started raising wages in their local leagues to entice their players to stay at home. This is a start but in addition, FIFA should reduce the number of foreign players available to each team, say, two and change the format so that all competing teams play the same game. Failing this, it is useless to continue the competition in its form.
