Game Review – Fire Pro Wrestling Returns
The North American release of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns was November 13. This has been two years since the Japanese release. After spending almost two solid weeks with the game, I think I can give an unbiased review. I’m a long time fan, but I can see it’s wrong. How does Fire pro Wrestling Returns stack up against the most popular competition? To begin with…
There are no major changes to the Fire Pro’s basic gameplay. It’s a solid way to fight long term fans are used to it. Those new to the Fire Pro will need to spend some time getting used to it. The battle system punishes button presses. I would advise newcomers to set COM difficulty to 1 and work up to the difficulty level. This is one of those games where appreciation only comes after learning the ins and outs.
This type of writing is a solid game and a great series. FPR has 327 real-life competitors. To avoid copyright issues, each one has been renamed. Vader is called “Saber”, Kenta Kobashi is “Keiji Togashi”, etc. Feel free to refer to each as appropriate. You also have the option to change the clothes to make them into random characters. You don’t have to give away one of your 500 matches (CAW) when your favorite wrestler makes a magic switch.
The FPR all-star team consists of boxers, boxers and mixed martial artists from around the world. Puroresu legends such as Giant Baba, Satoru Sayama (Tiger Mask) and Jushin “Thunder” Lyger are optional. As always the standing list is dominated by Puro fighters. Some of the fighters who are well known to American wrestling/UFC fans include Bret Hart, Sting, Andre the Giant, Petey Williams, Mirco Cro Cop and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
A new addition to the list is the “corner to center” attack. When your opponent is knocked down in the middle of the ring, you can hide in the corner to land a spear, a big kick or any number of other techniques. This adds drama and accuracy to suit those who set up these shows in a certain way. Thanks to this new look, you can make a proper Shawn Michaels or Bill Goldberg if you want to.
Metal matches have been added at last. Players can use weapons like barbed wire bats, or even a cage to hurt others. Other types of matches include S-1 (boxing, only boxing), Gruesome (a UFC-inspired 12-round cage) and the Electrified Barbed Wire Exploding Deathmatch. Despite Hell in a Cell, Japanese fighters throw each other on electric boards covered in barbed wire. It’s different, but fun none the less
Buzz features include Ref edit, Belt Edit, and Ring/Logo Edit. There is a GM mode called “Match Maker”, but it is very limited. What you do is set up matches between fighters and it’s adjusted by how many people play. There are special events that occur during match making that do not do much to grow beyond the limit. For some inexplicable reason, the matches that were created are banned from using the Match Maker.
The presentation is nothing special. The menu is useful, but finding some items can be a chore at times FPR’s 2D graphics remind me of arcade games like Wrestlefest. Character sprites are not hi hi resolution, but they are large and detailed. Spike could have recycled the graphics from Fire Pro Wrestling Z. They instead created new sprites and reworked the existing moves. Some animations look robotic, but they are perfectly smooth.
I’m sad to say that Spike repainted the weapon button on the run button. Want to find a fluorescent tube from around the corner while playing a match of exploding barbed wire? Make sure you are close enough to the tubes. Otherwise you’ll run into barbed wire, and you’ll look like an idiot. It doesn’t crash the game or anything, but ignoring the R2 button has surprised me. Overall, this is one of my biggest gripes with FPR.
I do not give numbers or grades in my reviews. If I were the type to do this, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns would probably get a 91. It’s the best in the series, but like any other game it has its flaws. Even the so-called classic games that get a lot of perfect reviews and few mistakes or glitches. I recommend this game to anyone who is into wrestling or the UFC. You don’t have to live in Puro to love FPR, the unique gameplay and options to choose from are enough to increase the interest of its owners.
