World Cup History
The World Cup Soccer is an international soccer tournament in which the men’s national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association or FIFA, the world governing body for sports.
The first international football tournament was a tough one that took place in Glasgow in 1872. It was a match between Scotland and England. At the time the game was rarely played outside of the United Kingdom, but it became popular in other parts of the world around the turn of the century. It was held as an exhibition game without prizes in 1990. However, in 1904 the Summer Olympics were upgraded by the IOC to an official event.
FIFA was founded in 1904. The organization tried to organize an international competition between countries outside of the Olympics in Switzerland in 1906. In its early days, FIFA’s history described the event as a failure.
As years passed and improvements were made, the first world cup was created. Due to the success of the Olympic football tournament, FIFA together with the president, the driving force started again. Creating a world championship outside of the Olympics was part of the plan. On May 28, 1928, FIFA Congress in Amsterdam plan was fulfilled. They decided to create a world championship organized by FIFA.
Selected countries with national football associations were invited to send a team. Uruguay as an election was a hindrance. It meant that the race would be a long and expensive journey across the Atlantic for Europeans. No European country has committed to sending a team until two months before the tournament. President Rimet, then FIFA president, persuaded Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia to participate. In fact thirteen countries took part in the first World Cup Soccer. Seven teams from South America, four from Europe and two from North America, all together.
