Russia To Host FIFA World Cup 2018
FIFA has awarded Russia the right to host the 2018 World Cup finals after the country secured the majority of votes from 22 FIFA officials in a secret ballot held in Zurich.
Spain-Portugal, Holland-Belgium and England were the other three bids in the competition. The selection was based on multiple votes, with the country receiving the fewest votes being eliminated in each category.
About 15 votes were received from the countries that want to host the event in 2018, and Russia won 13 votes, in the second round of voting, after getting nine votes in the first round. Spain’s rivalry with Portugal received seven votes.
The competition in Russia will be held in 13 cities, all in the European region, with the aim of helping people to find it easily. In their bid, Russia promised to waive visa requirements for the 2018 tournament and this appears to be a major factor in the vote in favor of the country.
The vote in Zurich also decided who will host the 2022 tournament, which was awarded to Qatar. The Middle-Eastern oil-rich country won against the United States, Japan and South Korea, in the final vote. Australia’s bid for the 2022 World Cup was eliminated in the first round of voting.
Mexico, which had previously bid to host the 2022 tournament, withdrew its bid due to financial constraints.
Neither Russia nor Qatar has hosted the event before. The awarding of the competition to the two countries has ended the conflict between the elections which led to the suspension of two members of the executive committee.
