Japanese Gambaru – Literal Meaning and Cultural Impact
Words Gambaru in Japanese it means to do the best and stick to the bitter end. This means that gambaru students study hard to pass exams, gambaru athletes work hard to win sports, and gambaru company employees work hard to increase sales. It also means to work hard or patiently, to insist on having your way, and to have one place without leaving, as in working or at the workplace. Gambaru also comes from the following saying, “A monk who does not work should not eat.”
There is an important word for “gambaru, which is Gambare or Gambette. The important word means great gain, mutual support, and management of group unity. This word is also used among members to encourage others in group activities.
Japanese people use the word gambare often and for different reasons. They usually use this word once a day when saying goodbye and at the end of a letter. Japanese people also use this word to encourage each other with the meaning of the phrase “Please keep working hard until your goal is achieved.”
The term is also often used as an adjective. Japanese people may use this term in the early stages of a project. For example:
a) After the earthquake in Kobe, Japan, the words Gambare Kobe was used to encourage the people of Kobe to rebuild their city and rebuild their lives.
b) Japanese people also use this word among people in a group to encourage each other to do things together. For example, on school race days, children can be heard shouting “gambare” or “gambatte” to encourage their peers in the race.
c) Japanese people also use this word as a spectator to entertain their group. For example, during the 1998 World Cup soccer match in France, Japanese spectators cheered the words Gambare Nippon! During the competition, the word was used in TV programs and commercials every day.
The literal meaning of gambaru is “to stick to something tightly.” It is a very popular word used to motivate someone to do a very difficult task. Additional definitions are: Hang in there, Don’t give up, Do your best, and Give it your all! The word also means hard work and patience. In addition, it inspires interest and perseverance in others.
Gamburu also has some additional meanings, some of which can be considered as negative meanings. Depending on the interpretation of the word, it also means “to insist on having one’s ways,” and “to stay in one place without leaving.” Additionally, the word comes from ga-o-haru, meaning “to be selfish.” This word originally had a negative meaning of self-discrimination in the decisions of the group.
One may ask whether other languages have anything similar to gambari. According to Amanuma (1987, pp. 51-53), gambari, which is derived from gambaru, has no real equivalent in non-Japanese languages. In addition, Amanuma says, “Although Chinese and Korean have characters that form gambaru (gambari is derived from gambaru), they do not have words that have the same shape. and it describes some characteristics of Japanese culture.
There are various proverbs that can show the difference between Japanese culture and American culture such as Gambaru’s morals. A proverb based on Japanese culture says, “A monk who does not work should not eat.” This talks about the fact that a person must work and that through work they can live. The Japanese did not think of sports or free time in this proverb, unlike Americans in the following proverb.
Or, as an American proverb says, “All work and no play makes Jack a foolish boy.” This means that one should not work but rest and play. It places sport and work in the same category, and on the same level as virtue. The story of the play in this proverb makes the Japanese people uncomfortable with Gambaru’s morals in American terms.
